• Unlawful taking and carrying away of a person against that person's will by force or fraud, usually for ransom.
Syn. abduction, rapto. child stealing, secuestro o rapto de menores. hijacking, secuestro.
Kidnapping and false imprisonment are close in meaning yet clearly differentiated: false imprisonment does not require taking and carrying away, while kidnapping is a false imprisonment with the added removal of the victim to another location. The equivalent terms in Spanish are secuestro and privación ilegal de la libertad. Their distinguishing feature is, unlike kidnapping and false imprisonment, that while secuestro often involves a request for ransom by the perpetrator privación ilegal de la libertad does not.
